Spa Classic 2011 - Sixties' Endurance

Spa Classic 2011 - Sixties' Endurance
01/06/2011, 22:57:23
The category allowing the entry of the pre-66 GT cars and pre-63 Sports Cars, had thirty-eight cars on the starting off, a number lower than envisaged, but decidedly better than the few cars seen at Navarra. Among them there were many AC Cobras, the Jaguar Type E and Porsche 911, but also some rarer cars like the Aston Martin DBR4 Gt, the TVR Griffith and above all the Skoda Sport, early seen at the Historic Monaco. As usual the Cobras dominated this race with the TVR of McInerney only offering a certain resistance, third in a practice session during which Hugenholtz-Hart at the wheel of their brawny American car had ill-treated all the rivals. But in the race the rivals rolled up their sleeves, ... Vai all'articolo

Devoted to historic Touring and Gt cars for competition and production having raced and been homologated between 1947 and 1976, it has been the category with the bigger number of vehicles started off: 52 cars. Both practice and race were dominated by Terriou-Gary on the wheel of their Porsche 911 3.0.RSR, whose rate has immediately appeared unreachable.Only in the first stages of the race their leadership was brought into discussion by duo Lange-Thibalt in Porsche 911 2.7RS, later finished second, and by Godfray in Chevrolet Corvette forced to retire at mid-race while he was fighting a thrilling duel against the future winners.   RACE ... After the start of the championship at Donington for the Historic Festival, the Group C racing moved to the Spa circuit for the most impressive heat of all the championship. At the start of the weekend here the 25 cars among which two Mercedes C11’s and two Nissan R90C’s, but even a fantastic model of Lancia LC2, the C Group crated to confront the Porsche 956’s, recovered and brought to the track by Clevery. Since practice it has been clear that fight for victory would be reserved for duo Berride-Glaesel, both at the wheel of Mercedes C11’s, decidedly faster than the other rivals. Pole went to the more expert English driver (with four participation in the 24 hours ... Vai all'articolo

Reserved for single-seaters which have raced on the circuits in the 80’s and 90’s, this category has taken part for the first time in an event organized by Peter Auto. It’s a fairly new reality, created with the involvement of some drivers who, after the bankruptcy which eliminated Euroboss at the beginning of 2010, were trying to repeat the earlier success, when at the starting off there were twenty participants. Besides, some interesting cars made their appearance on the track like a Jordan 191, the car driven by Schumacher for his debut in Formula 1just in Belgium, two Tyrrell 026, one of them powered European and the Prost 02 on which was mounted an excellent V10 Peugeot. In ... After the half-failure of Navarra, the category purposely created for the cars that were protagonists in the Shell Historic Challenge, has newly offered a first class show as it happened last year at Le Castellet. In paddocks it was possible to see again the ISO A3C and the Bizzarrini 5300 GT, one beside the other, together with the Maserati Birdcage, a good number of Ferraris 250 Europa and 275 GTB versions, the Istotta Rivalta IR300 and above all a very beauty and rare Ferrari 250 Europa Gt with a V12 “corto”, hidden under its bonnet, engine designed by Gioacchino Colombo. On practice the Birdcage took Pole position but on the third lap was forced to retire, leaving Gaye in his ... Vai all'articolo

After Jacques Nicolet’s success at Navarra, the Classic Endurance Racing has been held on the legendary circuit of Spa Francorchamps for the second qualifying practice of championship, scheduled inside the Spa Classic race. Unlike what happened in the first practice, at Spa there was a return to the formula used last year during the Dix Mille Tours of Paul Ricard with two separate groups, one for P1s and GT1s (CER 1) and the other for P2s and GT2s, (CER2), which allowed the entry of about one hundred cars. Once again the exhibition didn’t fail to meet expectations, with uncertain races in both groups and with new protagonists who have mixed their balance.

If on one hand CanAm has been a category that has put on the track a smaller number of cars, on the other hand we cannot deny that it has represented one of the major attraction of this Dix Mille Tours. It was born at the beginning of the year, this revisit is intending to re-enter the racing cars, which have taken part between 1966 and 1974 into category of the same name or into Interserie, being convinced that these double-seaters has anything but interest waned. In the stands reserved for them there are one beside the other: the AVS Shadows Mk1, recently revised by Harm Langaji according to the original configuration designed in 1968 by young Trevor Harris, the Lola T310, the last CanAm built ... If the six cars, which entered to the category reserved for Italian jewel, have turned out certainly few, the presence among them of a Maserati model Type 61 Birdcage, exhibited on the track by Carlo Vogele, has permitted to have a close look at one of the six models designed by Giulio Alfieri and properly considered as the best result achieved for the competitive cars with front engine. It’s sufficient to go close to the fine Italian “barchetta” to understand how highly refined this project was, aimed at obtaining a product which could dominate at Le Mans. Unfortunately, the fragility often shown prevented the achievement of this impressive result, but it’s necessary ... Vai all'articolo

Even if without relying on a large number of participants, Sixties’ Endurance has stood out for the quality of cars and the competitive spirit shown by some crews. Without detracting merits from Jaguars Type E driven by Traber/Davies and AC Cobra with Cazalieres/Ferrer, the most admired GT was the TVR Griffith 200 entered by McInerney family: it was only produced in 192 units between 1964-1965, was built by Jack Griffith and Mark Donohue with chassis TVR Grantura, very light bodywork in fiber glass and powered with same V8 Ford mounted on AC Cobra cars. It is said that the American driver had decided on its production owing to a dinner with Carrol Shelby, during which he had declared he ... Vai all'articolo

After a year of great successful events the CER of 2011 season has opened on the very new circuit in Navarra. The circuit is located to the south of Pamplona among gentle hills and lush fields of wheat. The good number of participants (forty) didn’t succeed in fading the partial disappointment due to the absence of longed awaited Ferraris 312 Pb and Toj Sc302: due to various reasons these prototypes claims for one visit to the Paddock of the category, but in return, for the first time we have seen the still existing three Lolas T280, one beside the other. Among the 25 entered cars belonging to this category, as mentioned before reserved to the Gt’s built by Italian constructors within 1966, it was particularly interesting the possibility to admire, one beside the other, the ISO A3/C and Bizzarrini 5300 Gt, the twin cars that can tell most of Giotto Bizzarrini’s story. Just on the track there was the ISO dominium, driven by Francioni-Barth (67) team match, both on the qualifying tests and race 1, ahead of the fantastic Ferrari 250 GTB with Gaye (8), the expert driver who took advantage of the leader’s pit to take the lead temporary before suffering his return, while another struggler for victory Knap field (44), in Ferrari 275 ... Similar in the rules of Trofeo Nastro Rosso, at least for the participation of Sports cars and the two-hour duration of the unique race, it counted, among participants, many of the cars which had entered the GT & Sports Car Cup race at Monza during the Inter-Europe Cup. As usual the English and American cars were the leaders, it was, once again, their ally the long straights that let them exploit major horse power. Caron at the wheel of AC Cobra (12), after dominating qualifying tests and the first half of the race, was forced to retire and give its twin car Mahe-Ferrer (59) to go-ahead and let it take two-minute’s lead over the Corvette driven by Francioni-Barth (52), while the first ... The fifth and last practice of the championship "2010 Group C Racing" has taken place on the circuit of Paul Ricard during the Dix Mille Tours, as usual met by the welcome and approval of the present public: still today it gives the creeps to even more trained fans the roars of the engines which thrust these prototypes. A false note has been the absence of the leaders of Le Mans race; in particular, of the three Jaguars that on Sarthe had monopolized qualifying practice and race, which has reduced the cars on the track to the number of fifteen. On Friday during the free test session, there was the fight between most favourites Evans-Berridge in the Mercedes C11 (2) and Nathan Kinch ... Vai all'articolo

Repetita iuvant

Many novelties have accompanied the fifth and last practice of the 2010 CER championship, which took place on Paul Ricard circuit during the first edition of the Dix Mille Tours: among the others the first of all was the organizers’ decision to run two separate races, the former reserved to P1 and GT1 (CER1) the latter to P2 and GT2 (CER2), with the intention of offering harder fought races at the same time satisfying a major number of new entered competitors. Other important novelty was the name of “Grand prix de Gstaad” given to the event by the good office of Stephane Gutzwiller, member of Gstaad Automobile Club and entered into CER with a Chevron ...
